bill rauhauser retrospective at coup d’état
“Coup D’état is thrilled to present “Bill Rauhauser: A Retrospective” in collaboration with Hill Gallery. The late master lensman and Kresge Arts Detroit Eminent Artist Award recipient photographed the streets of Detroit – and its people – for decades, capturing the raw humanity, spirit and soul of this city.
Rauhauser, widely considered “The Dean of Detroit Photography” helped shape Detroit’s photographic community: teaching and mentoring young artists; introducing the community to photography as an art form through his pioneering gallery Group 4; and capturing the rhythm and life of the city through his iconic images.”
Iconic.
The images speak for themselves as Rauhauser is masterful at capturing portraiture in dynamic compositions while communicating a decided attitude. Black and white spotlights arrangements with no color to distract from the subjects and their environment.
I love this composition. Working in thirds with the white coat in the far-left position visually pulling the other figures forward.
A short interview with Jeff Newsom representing the Hill Gallery explaining the collaboration with Coup D’état.
This exhibition’s display is a dramatic departure from what is normally expected from an artist of this caliber. The smaller pieces are difficult to see at that vision level but overall the installation narrates a bygone Detroit providing a distinctive vibe for that space. Coup D’état opened in December and occupies the coveted location in the Lantern where the highly recognizable exterior is reflected indoors adding its characteristic design element.
On view through May 1 at Coup D’état 9301 Kercheval Ste 6, Detroit
