“Juried by Kathryn Pistor, “Marking a Moment” features a wide variety of painting styles by 20 of the group’s members. The subject matter, ranging from landscape and florals to abstraction, marks a moment in time from this dynamic painting group, originally established in 1944. For more than Sixty years, the Birmingham Society of Women Painters (BSWP) has brought together artists of merit to further their shared interests. Founded in 1944 to provide formal instruction and workspace for women painters, the BSWP is today a dynamic organization of over 50 artists working in diverse media. A commitment to the highest standards in creative expression and art education links the generations of BSWP members.”
Kristen Carey delivers a tiny gem in this impressionistic, serene landscape. The easy transition from light yellow to transparent blue behind composition defining trees creates depth of field. The rough edges make this picture seem casual, like the artist painted it in a moment of inspiration then quickly moved on. Just because something is small doesn’t mean it’s insignificant.
This graphical rendering’s clean, lilting symmetry is complemented by delicate line work and soft, precise shading. Use of negative space offers a place of visual rest.
Evening on the Thames presents a thoughtful composition in soft, mossy green offsetting the brighter blues sparked by just the right amount of orange, albeit a little too evenly distributed for my taste. Irregular, expressive lines generate energy while the allowed canvas surface provides added texture.
No one grants a common landscape interest like Fran Wolok. Layers of vigorous, loose marks, the shadowed foreground lightening to a peek of what lies beyond the immediate scene, creates this picture’s depth. The dormant tree’s black branches perfectly break the thick foliage.
Because so many different artists are represented in this show, there is a wide range of techniques and materials. This group of seasoned makers show off their experienced practice in an exhibition of intelligible and enjoyable work.
