“This exhibition is a collection of artwork made by present and former Ypsi Alloy Studios artists. Each artist was tasked with exploring how recent events shape how they see themselves and their artistic practice. In the center of it all is Ypsi Alloy Studios, an artist collective and studio space in Ypsilanti, MI.”
Co-curator Paloma Núñez-Regueiro writes a letter in an arrangement of paper tiles that use portions of outtakes from previous printing projects then intricately sews in tactile depth. Her complex personal language types out a secret message to an unknown recipient.
Curatorial partner Jessica Tenbusch delivers tiny but well-constructed found-object wall sculptures. These pieces relate to each other without the benefit of any particular meaning. Stripes and texture pull the eye from one to another.
Waxy and expressive, drips run down the page toward a roughly hewn conclusion. Pigment is allowed to schmear and collect obscuring the precision of the initial drawing. The henna coloration reminds of Conté crayon sketches softening the composition.
This well-composed, intriguing image sparks a multitude of interpretations. Since no clues are given, the mystery of how the faux aged look is accomplished is relegated to Photoshop assumptions. That this is merely a standard sized inkjet print renders this piece wildly overpriced at $2500. Bummer because this was the image that drew me to the show.
Like every other tranche of life, the artworld is undergoing change and transformation. How each artist experiences this is unique to them resulting in a range of materials and outcomes. This show only scratches the surface as artists move through the personal, social and political turbulence we’ve all recently encountered.
