flight at janice charach gallery
Artists from across the country come together to share their interpretation of a single word: flight. This all-media exhibition explores human connection, innovation and diversity. The Janice Charach Gallery encourages all artists to participate. For some, this is their first gallery show.
As a young girl Terri Sarris imagined what it might feel like to fly. Including a bird’s frame-by-frame ascent over tiny celestial maps, this piece is crammed with detail which keeps the viewer searching. Protruding tacks serve to secure the protective glass as well as contribute to the visual rebus.
Jennifer Kesler’s excellent use of color and varied textures create a fabulously wonky composition that reminds of favorite childhood book illustrations where the viewer has to make the trek through a treacherous landscape in order to confront the Evil Queen and restore peace to the kingdom. Or you can take the stairs to your secluded winter cabin.
Kristine Olson’s landscape is far less perilous. Her non-traditional palette keeps the painting from becoming trite. Texture is thoughtfully placed weighting the scene. Tiny veins coupled with canvas orientation are enough to break the otherwise horizontal dominance.
Bird’s composition is tight in the center then explodes outward in sort of a miniature Big Bang. Viviano’s spontaneous marks generate a tremendous amount of energy in this bird’s eye view over a city or plot of land.
Debbi Dunne’s Frenzy in Flight is a literal interpretation of this exhibition’s theme. Her gorgeous pollinators flutter right off the canvas. In her first exhibition ever, she sold all 3 of her entries. Congratulations and welcome!
Luzhen Qui is the master of the tranquil, expertly organized composition. Layered images and subtle use of color create softly dynamic pictures that immediately calm the viewer.
From beginners to seasoned artists, the scope of this exhibition is enormous. With so many artists participating—too many to list individually— considerable manifestations of this theme are presented in all manner of media. From literal adaptions to flights of fancy, this show demonstrates a range of voices that come together to challenge a viewer to consider where they might catch a ride to a loftier destination.
On view through August 11th at Janice Charach Gallery 6600 W Maple, W Bloomfield
