What an honor to spend a few minutes in the studio with this legendary textile artist. Knodel was the head of Cranbrook Academy of Arts fiber arts department from 1970-1997 then served as the school director until 2007. Knodel’s work is included in collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Minneapolis Institute of Art, while enjoying several prestigious grants and awards.
With mastery and wisdom of decades of practice, enthusiasm for his craft has only accelerated. His exuberant playfulness is infectious, inspiring any maker to plot new journeys in their chosen genre. One of the best things about being an artist is there’s no completion. The traveler continues explorations in their environment, both physical and mental, discovering new ways to translate findings into their work.
Usually I include video interviews with the exhibition’s written portion but with Knodel’s book release and marionette performance happening at Wasserman Projects this Saturday March 29th, it seemed timely to post today. The event is scheduled to begin at 3P. It’s free and open to the public.
