“Working across many different media, cultures, and contexts, the artists selected for this year’s Hot DAM! The Detroit Artist Market Annual capture the city’s incredible artistic energy. Facing a time of transformation in Detroit and beyond, they yearn for change, seek solace, and imagine new ways of being and belonging in a complicated world.” –Katie Pfohl, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts
The Fruits of Labor’s coloration commands attention then retains it through impeccable execution and captivating storytelling. The monochromatic subject contains wisps of orange throughout while reimagining a familiar idiom offering ‘the orange doesn’t fall far from the tree’.
As Allen is traditionally a painter, 8 Mile doesn’t read collaged until the viewer is nose-distance away. The energy of the infamous street is tamed with heavy black lines organizing a piece with very little negative space to rest.
Davis captures a fresh narrative on what has become a pedestrian landscape as the subject’s hoodie harmoniously blends with snow covered bricks. A curl of smoke animates what is often a static scene absent of its accompanying humanity.
Biswas’ fiber piece shimmers with metallic threads, gently undulating with natural movement in the gallery. The anchoring branch’s organic shape causes ripples and the irregular hemline while intentional gaps create compositional patterning.
Hot DAM! Is a multi-media exhibit showcasing the Detroit art community’s scope of visual communication. As the city evolves, its artists reflect collaboration and inclusion, celebrating and embracing growth and expansion in our collectively bright future.
On view through August 10th at Detroit Artists Market 4719 Woodward Detroit. See website for complete list of participating artists.
