“Ordinarily, writing shares ideas by translating them into arrangements of symbols that can be understood by applying the rules of a language. The artists in this show transcend the usual ways writing communicates by creating new writing systems, reinterpreting ancient forms of written communication, or using written signs in nonlinguistic ways to express meaning in situations where ordinary languages will not suffice.”
“I continually seek the complete work that contains both the beauty of gesture and a core of meaning.” –Lynne Avadenka
Avadenka succeeds in her quest using shimmering, intricate Judaic symbols printed on matte black that spin dramatic magic. The spirograph pattern moves in and out of shadow generating dimension and motion.
Aje integrates shapes and motifs reflecting the Nigerian tradition of Tubali architecture where similar designs decorate dwellings and mosques establishing the interconnectedness between the Hausa people and their environment. The viewer wrestles with barely-contained visual chaos attempting to decipher forms and patterns embedded in heavy layers of materials and paint.
Influenced by Japanese Wabi-Sabi, Fotiu presents the antithesis to Aje’s work in minimal, mindful configurations. Tiny marks compel the viewer to lean in, closely investigating intriguing detail that’s perfectly imperfect where even the signature contributes to the composition.
Hamrick weaves symbols into her etching that appear to float across the page. Smudges and schmears resulting from the creation process add value and depth.
This is the second exhibition currently on view that explores language beyond its familiar employment exchanging information, ideas and emotions by presenting linguistics as shapes that can be exquisitely and seductively arranged further mining descriptions of the human experience.
Participating artists: Jide Aje, Nina Ashraf Asmi, Lynne Avadenka, Yoriko Cronin, Eric Fogle, Espacia Fotiu, Jennifer Gariepy, Janet Hamrick. Exhibition curated by Veronica Bielat.
