“Lay of the Land presents five artists’ unique interpretations of the natural world. Creating a dialogue between painting and photography, this exhibition delves into the interplay of light, texture, and form while blending abstract, realistic and surreal perspectives. Each work invites viewers to see landscapes through a new lens and questioning how we perceive and connect with our surroundings.”
A splash of strategically placed cool green integrates with midnight blues as the viewer’s eye rolls and tumbles with a dark and moody Night River. Discernible brushstrokes render rocks and falls while softer blends become mist and swirling froth. Exemplary lighting describes motion as much as mystery.
The deep foliage perfectly segues in saturated yellow and forest greens. Impeccable attention to value creates depth while camouflaging what appears to be a ghost figure recumbent in the shrouded scene. Marie clearly states monochromatic doesn’t mean variations on beige.
Anderson’s signature landscape subject captures an earthier, highly textured palette. The terraced layers’ lines provide movement in a subtle composition of demarcated forms.
Young’s dynamic mirrored imagery explodes in orangey reds. Deep umber tree branches form a kaleidoscope patterning affording structure to the dappled leaves.
The new year didn’t waste any time launching a spirited exhibition combining well established artists with up and coming. Each work beautifully delivers a personal vision of the stunning natural world while offering viewers the opportunity to consider their relationship to our shared environment.
