The votes are in and it’s a tie between longer monthly posts and random bi-monthly posts. I’m thinking a blend of both with a longer, more investigative review if the show warrants it complemented by a shorter, livelier post the same month. They’ll come out randomly. They might publish back to back. Sometimes there will be weeks between. The idea is to keep the writing and reading fresh and interesting.
I’m going to get into the exhibition with El Anatsui, Nick Cave, Myrlande Constant and José Parlá opening at Library Street on August 9th. There’s been so much focus on the Shepherd, this is a strong show at the Belt location. There are some nice parallels between Anatsui and Cave regarding employment of materials. Not sure how Parlá fits into that. I’m also not terribly familiar with Constant’s work so that’ll be enlightening. There won’t be a lot of work as that space is tiny compared to the Shepherd, so we’ll see.
Looking ahead, Murals in the Market is back in Eastern Market this September. This is awesome news as some of the older installations are looking a little sad having been neglected for some time. Participating artists include BakPak Durden, recent Kresge Fellow Ivan Montoya and it wouldn’t be the same without Sheefy McFly and Nicole McDonald.
I don’t always know if I’m having any impact, so this poll not only helped reshape this blog going forward, your enthusiastic comments reignited my passion for this project. Thank you for your support, input and kind words. Feel free to keep discussions going! It keeps all of us connected.
P.S. I might abbreviate the gallery link list putting the lion’s share of my effort into the art reports. If you want the full-on list of every show happening that week, subscribe to Art Detroit Now. They’re the definitive Detroit gallery guide.
