“There’s nothing like the feeling of nostalgia; the sentimental wistful affection for the past. Recollection features artworks of all medias that bring artists and the audience to reminisce on past memories. From imagery of old toys, cars and TV shows to abstract thoughts discussing the act or feeling of recalling the past, this exhibition featuring local Michigan artists will bring viewers back to the good-ol-days.”
Photographer Christopher Schneider riffs on author Edward Gorey’s alphabet book The Vinegar Works in which he describes the untimely deaths of 26 children. These tiny dioramas’ intricate detail fascinates in storytelling as much as mechanics. The absence of color emphasizes shape and shadow of assembled detritus.
Jones’ painting commands the eye through theatrical and fastidious execution. The deep reds generate drama for what is an ordinary childhood scene experimenting with the sun’s power to set anything ablaze. (apologies for the lighting on oil interference)
Snider fondly recalls spending time at the late Suzanne Hilberry’s home. Coloration warms panoramic perspective with a dab of orange and a hint of pink in the cheerful turquoise sky. Painted on panels, the grid remains visible along with uneven edges.
The opening day crowd was absolutely enthralled with the Spence family’s recreation of their home inhabited from 1972-1987. Materials from Tupperware lids to hairbrush bristles are ingeniously transformed into remarkable features such as band specific record albums, a copy of The Great Gatsby lying open on the bed and a cookie jar sitting on top of an olive-green refrigerator in that 70’s kitchen. This dollhouse sized flashback began as a pandemic lockdown project which took over two years to complete.
These works afford visitors a window into the makers’ fondest recollections created in a loving narrative taking the memory box to a new level.
On view through Dec 11th at Janice Charach Gallery 6600 W Maple, W Bloomfield. Visit the website for the full list of participating artists.
