…I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer. -Nick Carraway, The Great Gatsby.
After long winters bereft of sunshine and rainy spring days the annual arrival of summer brings a return to color with bright blue skies, vibrant gardens, brilliant sunsets, and a certain kind of light unique to the season. It is the best of times.
Mitch Cope’s Yellow Rose Moon welcomes visitors with floating sunny roses, thickly painted, drips running down a reflective grey pond. The temperate scene is momentarily disturbed by the visible seam left untreated, perhaps as a reminder of what we’ve all just been through having left a collective mark.
Lost City #11 looks like a sea bed with the perforations leaving trails and tracks along a sandy floor. The title seems to indicate submerged remains of life before things went dark but delivered in a palette that’s a calming hope. It’s deliciously quiet in this terrestrial landscape.
Lauren Semivan challenges the limits of what we think we see. Her images read so dimensional, you have to resist the temptation to touch the piece to check if they’re really flat. Creases in the paper only add to the perceived topography. This image billows and flows with the breeze of lighter days.
It’s been hella intense the past 15 months. The summer solstice brought visions of lazy summer days, friends and drinks to go with, to dance in our heads. We all need a good vacay and these artists grant a visual reprieve, reminding us to slow down and smell the yellow roses. Our best days lie ahead.
