The Bennett Collection, which is a promise gift to the MMA, is comprised of dozens of works by women, both historical and contemporary, who paint in a figurative realist style. This exhibition closes May 11.
The collectors, Steven Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, also sponsor the Bennett Prize which is hosted by the MMA every two years and is a juried exhibition open to women realist painters. Typically 600+ apply. The fourth iteration of this opens May 15 with ten finalists; one will be awarded $50,000 over two years and a solo show at the MMA. The Prize is not open to hobbyists or students or artists who have been paid, or received an award, of $25,000 or more for any single work of art. The Bennett Prize exhibition opens May 15. At the end of its run here, it will travel to 4-6 sites around the country. The next open call for artists for the fifth Bennett Prize will be in 2026 for an exhibition in 2027.
Hi Judy. Thanks for the kind words as well as the intel. I generally don't cover shows outside the Detroit Metro. Might expand to A2 at some point but that's probably the extent of my traveling capacity. Please feel free to post events, open calls and whatnot in the comments. Plenty of Detroit makers who would appreciate it!
